If You're Looking To Start Therapy Consider These Things

Have you been considering going to therapy?

We often look for the perfect time to start a thing — whether that be a new hobby, relationship, or career. But, what if I told you, that now is the time to begin?

When considering going to therapy, you may think that the ideal time to start is when a catastrophe happens like after a messy divorce or when you discover a new mental health pattern.

With the new year quickly approaching you may have started your New Year’s resolutions with therapy on the top of the list. Instead, consider thinking that therapy is preventative care.

You don’t have to wait for a catastrophe to hit to start therapy.

Instead, you can be proactive and get ahead of your mental health for the remainder of the year.

September is the ninth month of the year, a month I like to think of as a new beginning. Our formative years are triggered when we see kids with backpacks and the stationary sections ransacked, it must be the unofficial new year. If you’re considering therapy, here are some reasons why now may be the perfect time for you.

You Want to Prevent a Blowout!

The holidays are coming up and for many, this may be a stressful time of the year. According to the American Psychological Association, about 41% of people feel as if their stress levels increase during the holiday months. From the expectation of family members or wanting to do everything perfectly, the holidays can be the time when you feel like you have to perform.

With so many emotions, the holiday time can be a triggering moment that pulls up emotions you didn’t know were there. Whether you are surrounded by family or friends or spending the holiday alone, it can remind you of previous trauma that was undealt with.

I’m reminded of an episode of The Bear, a Hulu series focusing on an Italian American family hoping to revive their family’s restaurant. In the episode, The Fishes, the matriarch of the family breaks down about being alone. In a conversation with her she says, “I make everything beautiful for them (in reference to her family) and no one makes anything beautiful for me. She then becomes angry and begins to sob while in her kitchen.

While this may be simply a television show, big emotions spring up during the holiday season. If you’ve been feeling frustrated with yourself or members of your family, now may be the time to dig deeper to discover what the root of the issue is.

Identify Limiting Behaviors

Do you feel like sometimes you’re hitting a wall? You may be experiencing success in your career, relationships, or family, but that doesn’t mean you can’t improve. Attending therapy with a licensed professional can help you identify roadblocks that may be preventing you from being your best self. Professionals are skilled in teaching ways to address problematic people or situations. Using these skills can help you when navigating work or family life.

These unconscious limiting behaviors may not even be stemming from you personally. Instead, maybe there are generational beliefs and sayings that you’ve overheard from your family or close friends. These too can infiltrate your life and sometimes unbeknownst to you, have an impact on the way you navigate certain situations.

You Want Extra Support

Your close friends may be a great support system, but they aren’t YOUR therapist. In fact, when chatting with them or having a heart-to-heart, you shouldn’t expect them to be. Therapists are trained to be your unbiased support system while using the clinical skillset they have gathered over several years to assist in your progress. Therapy can help with anything from managing the fear of starting a new job or wanting to jump back into the dating pool.

The body and mind are complex systems. Many therapists are also skilled in identifying mental health difficulties and can offer support for ways to deal with previous trauma. As you sit with your therapist, you can gain a better understanding of the many ways your mind, emotions, and body intersect.
