Here’s Why You Should Consider Therapy As Your Top New Year’s Resolution
As the new year approaches, everyone plans to create their vision boards, set their goals, and reinvent themselves to give themselves a fresh start. The new year often gives people the perfect time to change the things they aren’t too fond of.
According to a study completed by Pew Research Center, 3 out of 10 people create New Year resolutions with the hopes of improving themselves.
The end of the year is often the one time many people have to take a breather from all the hustle and bustle they’ve been doing throughout the year. Unfortunately, with this, they come to realize some of the habits formed throughout the year should be improved or simply changed.
With all of this, when I speak to people about their New Year’s resolutions, very rarely is one of their goals to start therapy.
While many create goals in the area of health and wellness or in their finances, the reality is that many people abandon their goals after the first couple of months.
Time to cut off that toxic ex? Looking to create a budget for your finances? These are all great goals. But, many find themselves in cycles every year trying to pursue goals and giving up midway. This could be due to a myriad of reasons like not having any accountability partners or losing momentum.
Pursuing therapy for the new year can be the first step in pursuing all of your other goals. Therapy continues to be an entryway for rediscovering parts of yourself. Therapists can often offer you tips for navigating your goals and help you identify the root cause for pursuing them.
Think about it. Nothing feels worse than creating a goal and realizing at the end of the year you didn’t accomplish it.
When setting goals they should be specific and cater to your needs as an individual. They shouldn’t be out of reach or too easy that they require no effort from you. When you sit down with a professional to identify what you want to work on, they can give you advice and strategy for navigating them throughout the year.
Consider speaking to a therapist about your New Year's resolutions. I would be honored to support you in your journey to becoming a better version of yourself.
